About the role

  • The Controller owns a portfolio of client accounts and steps into most of the client-facing controller work currently handled by the owner. This role is responsible for accurate, timely accounting; clear financial reporting; and proactive communication with small- and mid-sized business clients.
  • The Controller must be comfortable working remotely, coordinating with a distributed team, and leading conversations with U.S.-based business owners.

What you'll do

  • Primary accounting contact for assigned clients, providing ongoing client management and advisory.
  • Lead recurring client calls (monthly / bi-weekly) to review financials and explain results in clear, non-technical language.
  • Identify key issues (cash flow, margins, variances, compliance) and recommend actionable next steps.
  • Own full-cycle accounting and month-end close, including reconciliations, revenue recognition, AP/AR review, payroll entries, accruals, and prepaids.
  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) and management reports.
  • Maintain strong workpapers and documentation supporting all balances and adjustments.
  • Work primarily in QuickBooks Online, adhering to firm SOPs for bookkeeping and close.
  • Identify and resolve errors in client books; lead cleanup and correction projects.
  • Recommend process improvements and automations to increase efficiency and consistency.
  • Collaborate with bookkeeping teams (onshore and nearshore) to ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
  • Review delegated work and provide constructive feedback.
  • Consistently use and contribute to firm templates, checklists, and SOPs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on accounting experience, with progressive growth up to Senior Accountant role, including month-end close ownership.
  • Direct experience preparing monthly financial statements for small to mid-sized businesses.

Skills

  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online (multi-entity, classes, projects or similar).
  • Solid Excel/Google Sheets skills (vlookup/index-match, pivot tables, basic modeling).
  • Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP for small businesses.
  • Demonstrated ability to clean up messy books (unreconciled accounts, misclassifications, prior-period issues).
